Academic Environment
The IAS-STS offers excellent research infrastructure and provides Research Fellows and Visiting Scholars with a well-equipped workplace and excellent information and communication technology facilities. All Fellows and Scholars have access to the IFZ's library - containing well-resourced literature in relation to the Fellowship Programme's focuses - as well as access to other university libraries in Graz. There is also close co-operation with researchers at the IFZ - Inter-University Research Centre for Technology, Work and Culture, (the Graz unit of the Department of Research on Science and Technology / Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt;) guest lectures, workshops and conferences, which provide an atmosphere of creativity and scholarly discussion.
The IAS-STS is integrated into a network of eight universities in Graz: the Graz University of Technology, the University of Graz, the Medical University of Graz, the University of Music and Performing Arts, the University of Applied Sciences - FH Joanneum, the University of Applied Sciences Business Studies - Campus 02, the University of Teacher Education and, the Tertiary College of Education of the Catholic Church.
Some 50,000 students add to the social and cultural life of the city.
Graz also hosts JOANNEUM RESEARCH - one of the largest non-university research institutions in Austria, boasting more than 400 researchers - as well as Institutes of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Christian Doppler Laboratories, the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe and the European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights and Democracy .
Furthermore, a number of science-technology-industry clusters and networks are located in Graz, such as the greentech cluster Eco World Styria, the Wood Cluster, the Styrian nanotechnology initiative Nanonet-Styria, the BioNanoNet, the Creative Industries Styria, the Sustainable Vehicle Technologies Competence Center, the Bioenergy 2020+ Competence Center and, the Eco-Energy Network Styria.
