The IAS-STS is directed towards young scientists as well as senior scholars intending to research into the links and interactions between science, technology and society. To be eligible for membership, candidates must have completed university or college studies. Applicants for fellowships working on their dissertation or postdoctoral thesis are preferred.
The IAS-STS is open to participants from all countries of origin, academic positions and disciplines. In order to ensure an interdisciplinary structure and wide variety of methods, the Institute endeavours to appoint Research Fellows and Visiting Scholars from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. Moreover, the IAS-STS endeavours to appoint an equal number of male and female researchers.
The project Research Fellows or Visiting Scholars would like to work on should be within the thematical frame of the five issues mentioned in the Fellowship Programme. A fellowship at IAS-STS is only fruitful when it is defined within these issues!
There are no specialized courses and there is no educational programme to be attended at IAS-STS. We just offer office infrastructure and literature, and there are scholars at IFZ and IAS-STS who are specialized in the mentioned issues, and who are able to support the Fellows´ research, e.g. by discussing results.
It is the atmosphere of creativity, quietude, discussions etc., it is the intellectual environment why scholars come to IAS-STS. And they were and are completely free in choosing their projects - within the framework of the four project issues covered by the Fellowship Programme. Some of them are PhD-students writing their thesis. So if you are a student who has a professor as advisor at your home university and you want to spend some months doing research work in a stimulating atmosphere away from home: then IAS-STS is the place where you want to go! Some of them are senior academics. So if you would like to work on a paper or a book, away from your usual duties: then the IAS-STS is the place where you want to go!
The IAS-STS invites researchers for a stay as
Research Fellow (up to nine months) or as
Visiting Scholar (shorter period, e.g. a month).
The Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies decides on appointments after consulting the Scientific Advisory Board.
