I have had the good fortune to visit the IAS-STS and Graz on a number of occasions. These visits have always been particularly fruitful in terms of the high quality of academic engagement, pleasant environment, quality of facilities and personal generosity that have been offered to me. One of the unique features of the IAS-STS is that it seems to have been able to capture the historical charm, heart and character of Graz whilst providing a melting pot for local and international STS scholars and seeding ground for collaborations and new ideas. Like Graz the city, the IAS-STS seems to have got the balance right between tradition and innovation where a there is fertile and energetic space to do creative work but without the pretence and distractions that can be experienced in larger centres. I should also add that the food and beer is good and the Austrian countryside beautiful!
