I had the pleasure to stay as a visiting scholar at the IAS-STS for two periods during the academic year of 2010-2011. As an academic with a pre-school age child I appreciate the flexibility allowed for planning the timing of the stays! My visits have been intellectually invigorating in the sense that it is on rare occasions one can devote so much time to the very basics of academic research, that is to read, talk and think. In addition, the seminars have been thought provoking by offering a varied mix of interests, topics, backgrounds and researchers that go with them. My stays have been also productive and I have plenty of good ideas for how to continue work with my long-term topic. My heartfelt thanks to the local and visiting fellow scholars at IAS-STS!
My family has enjoyed exploring the city of Graz, its interesting fusion of architectures, peoples, cultures and landscapes. We have used the tram to go on short hikes, see ruins and castles, visits museums – perfect day trips! Last but definitely not lest, we have taken pleasure in the extensive selection of organic food, farmers’ and bio markets, wines, even an occasional beer!
